When Do I Need to Replace My Water Heater?
Over time and with age, your water heater is more likely to experience problems and is more susceptible to breaking down completely. A typical electric water heater lasts anywhere from 8 – 10 years, so once your tank reaches that age, you’ll want to check for the following symptoms:

Leaking
  • Rust and Corrosion – If you find rust in the vicinity of the pressure valve or water inlet/outlet hookups, it’s a telltale sign that your tank is rusting and needs to be replaced. Once rust and corrosion are present, there is no repair method and leaking will become inevitable, which is why replacement is necessary.
  • Drain Valve Stops Draining – Sediment within the water has the capability of building up within your tank, and oftentimes will clog the drain. Flushing your water heater annually is an effective method of avoiding this situation. However, if your drain reaches the point of not being able to drain, you will likely need to replace the tank entirely.
  • Leaking – When your water heater begins to leak, the most common cause is any number of internal issues, which are oftentimes unrepairable. If the leak is determined to be in the tank, you’ll need to start planning to replace your unit.
